  • You work under a constant pressure of time and therefore make the same portraits over and over again.
  • Or maybe you've almost given up working on your portraits because you're losing control?

In other words... you could use inspiration to lift the quality of your images. So your portraits will be beautiful. Mood-filled. Stands out. And lifts above average.

We will delve into the psychological aspects of portrait photography and we will emphasize that you learn how you can apply the methods in a busy everyday life to create personal and present images.

In addition, you will work with some of the special challenges that portrait photography offers when it comes to light and its use, and you will learn how to finish and retouch the portrait and become aware of how to frame a specific style and expression in your finished image.

Module 1
Light
Light

The understanding of light is crucial in working as a photographer, and this means that you can master and control the light when working with portraits both in studio and especially on-location. Technically, we work with how, with simple means and transportable light, you can create a number of lighting techniques that define and support a person's character and expression in different ways, so that you can actively use light to support your narrative.

Day 2
Person Instruction
Person Instruction

If a portrait is to be compelling and impactful, it must have a deeper layer of closeness and human recognisability. The tool is yourself and your motivation and limitations in meeting the person you portray. You will learn methods of how to direct another human being into different emotional spaces and states, and how your model gets to where the expression is felt genuine and concerned

Day 3
Image processing
Image processing

It is important that your finished portrait reflects your work and the narrative you wish to convey. Methods for selecting the best portrait are an essential part of this process, and just as important as the subsequent image processing and retouching of the portrait. We review best practices and workflows, optimal RAW conversion, and take a look at how to tackle typical challenges such as low color contrast, high iso skin tones and blend light, and they will demonstrate special techniques for black and white conversion, retouch and post-copy portraits.

FOLLOW-UP MENTORING SESSION
FOLLOW-UP MENTORING SESSION

What participants from previous workshops say
I can now portray anyone!
Helga as an instructor is incredibly dynamic and welcoming, but also with a sharp edge. You don’t get to rest on your laurels—you’re pushed out of your comfort zone. I’ve gained many new tools for photographing, and now I feel I can portray anyone.

Huge value for my business!
It’s been exciting for me to start the programme and be on a class with a creative focus. In my everyday life as a freelancer, I’m often very alone, and it has been good to be part of a creative, gathering environment over a longer period with competent teaching. I feel better equipped for my everyday life as a freelance photographer—and it has huge value for my business.

Intense, skilled, and inspiring.
You are intense, highly skilled, and inspiring as instructors - and I’ve truly had my eyes opened to all the details. Thank you for an amazing workshop.
Lars Sandager Ramlow
Journalist and editor at Frederiksborg Amts Newspaper
I’ve gone from 1 to 1000.
I think I went from 1 to 100 the first time I took a workshop with Helga. Now, with this Master in Portrait Photography, I’m probably closer to 1000. The teaching is exciting and incredibly educational across the board, the assignments are great, and the critique afterwards is genuinely useful. I can only recommend joining if you want to develop further, push your boundaries, and go deep.

From zero to hero in Photoshop!
I’ve learned an insane amount of Photoshop. Michael gave me a way to structure my files - before I was doing it a bit randomly and messing around. Now everything is completely under control. It’s been absolutely fantastic.

The programme is SO good!
My model responded really well to the Personal Direction, and I could clearly see changes and expressions in the face. This programme is SO good and incredibly educational.
